The following was directly communicated to us by the rabbi on 5/6/2015:
Chachamim hizharu b’divreichem - “Scholars be cautious with your words.” Indeed, poorly chosen words when spoken by an individual in a leadership position may result in a Chillul Hashem.
I must confess that I made a mistake. In my desire to help and encourage a well intended individual who invested over 10 years of his life on a project which he believed would help people in their observance and enjoyment of Shabbos, I made a gross error in judgment – I failed to consider all of the ramifications of my presentation, and entered into an arena of Halacha in which I truly do not belong.
The Kosher Switch is a new and innovative approach to the use of electricity on Shabbos. Its acceptance for general or even limited use depends upon the resolution of two primary issues:
A) Does the use of the Kosher Switch from a purely technical perspective constitute a violation on any level of a melocha on Shabbos?
B) Even if it is determined that it does not constitute a violation of a melocha, one must still consider what the long term effects of the use of the Kosher Switch will be upon the sanctity of Shabbos. Will it enhance the Shabbos, or, G-d forbid, will it be used to allow for conveniences that violate the spirit of Shabbos and as such threaten the atmosphere and Kedusha of Shabbos that has been achieved through the guidance and direction of our Chachomim
As of this moment, there is no consensus among the leading Rabbis to allow for the use of the Kosher Switch. In fact, the vast majority of the Gedolei Haposkim and Rabbonim have ruled (on various levels) against its use. Hence, I withdraw my endorsement of the Kosher Switch and completely defer to the ruling of the Gedolei Haposkim and Rabbonim who prohibit its use.
This retraction should in no way be perceived as a reflection upon the character or integrity of Menashe Kalati, the creator of the Kosher Switch. He is a devout Jew who carefully observes Torah and Mitzvos. However, I have cautioned him that to continue to promote this project runs counter to the aforementioned position of the leading Rabbis of our day.
The Rav’s in-depth analysis begins at time 18:15.
